Axel leapt through a dew-ladden meadow filled with multi-colored flowers while a luminescent white she-wolf padded up behind him. She spared a fleeting glance at the darkening sky that hung drearily overhead.
     "Looks like rain, eh?" She peered at the bright crimson wolf to see if he was paying attention.
      "Yeah. It does." He looked up at the sky with a dazed expression when a rain drop landed squarely on his soot-black nose. After the first drop came, the pellets of water started to come down in a torrent.
       "Lunar! Full-out to the tree!" Axel, sensing danger, shouted through the ever deafening din of the increasing curtain of rain, but it was too late. A thin strand of lightning pierced a tree trunk in front of Axel; toppling with great speed and creating a loud crash tha sent small animals scurrying to safety at an even faster rate. Lunar had stopped in her tracks, momentarily deafened by the noise, and stood amidst the rain, staring at Axel's seemingly life-deprived body.
       "Axel!" she cried, clearing the fallen tree in one bound and landing next to her mate's disheveled body. She examined him quickly. Lunar grabbed his scruff in her powerful jaws, and tryed to drag him backwards; she noticed his coal-colored tail fur caught on a large protruding branch. She franticaly pawed it loose not wasting anytime, wincing as another crash of thunder shook the ground underpaw. Pausing only to pant for breath, Lunar noticed a large oak tree looming not far from where she rested in the mud.
       "Come on! Wake up!" Frantic, exhausted, and soaked down to her bones, Lunar dragged Axel into the hollowed-out tree trunk. It had an earthy smell to it and was dark and dry in comparison to outside. Pushing and prodding Axel gently against the cool wall of the tree, the once luminescent she-wolf was now clad wit sodden white fur. As she rested her head on her large cream-white paws, swiveling it so that she could stare at Axel, she gave him a disheartened and crestfallen look. Slightly dozing from the effort that she had exerted, Lunar took a last look at the love of her life, the only one who made her happy. She shut her eyes, not daring to open them, not thinking that this could be it. A golden ray of early risen sun slanted in through the hole in the trunk, bathing Lunar's eyes and muzzle in the radiant glow. Instantaneously, her right eye shot open, and squinting because of the intensity of the sun, she let her eye wander to Axel's face.
     Something seemed out of place, and Lunar rook a momen to inspect the scene next to her. Not only had Axel changed positions, and was now sprawled oout on his back, paws spread out and his eyes wide open, his focused gaze not yet aware of her consciousness. The most obvious thing that made her inwardly cry in happiness was the steady movement of his still soaked pelt and the loud almost grunt-like sound of his breathing.
       "Good morning Lunar." Rolling over, he smirked at Lunar's still stunned and fatigued face and switched his gaze out of the hole as if to peek into their future.
       "You scared me, I thought you were a goner." She snuggled closer ro him, trying to warm up her drenched fur in the chilly morning air.
       "I can evade death, even. But only if I have you."
       "I love you, too." Lunar smirked and pressed her cream colored nose up against his soot-black nose, and then licked his cheek and they sat together watching the rest of the glorious sunrise unfolding the day.
